The choice depends primarily on the utility type, pipe or cable material, access to a connection point and site conditions.

First, identify the utility type

Before surveying, gather plans, information from the utility operator and visible site markings. Establish whether the target is conductive, can carry an active signal, has a tracer wire or is a plastic pipe. This determines the method and equipment required.

Records are not a substitute for a survey, and survey results should not be interpreted without context. Confirm the utility route at several points and indicate the confidence level of the result.

Underground utility locating methods

Passive modes

A locator can detect signals from live power cables or radio signals coupled onto conductive infrastructure. This is useful for an initial site sweep, but the absence of a signal does not mean that no utility is present.

Active methods using a signal transmitter

A signal can be applied by direct connection, with an inductive clamp or by induction from the surface. Direct connection generally makes it easier to distinguish the target conductor, whereas induction may also energise adjacent metal objects. The operator should monitor direction, signal strength and continuity.

An example of a current solution for precise tracing is Leica DT100 locator, which can be used with the Leica DE100 signal transmitter. Entry-level and more advanced models can be compared in the category cable and pipe locators.

Sonde or tracer wire

Where a non-metallic pipe is accessible, a sonde with its own transmitter or a tracing rod energised by a signal transmitter can be inserted. A sonde is located point by point, while the rod enables tracing along its entire inserted length. Always check the diameter, ensure the pipe is clear and verify compatibility with the locator.

GPR system

GPR is particularly useful for non-conductive targets or where no connection point is accessible. It records not only the pipe or cable itself but also changes in the ground and backfill. Its effectiveness depends on ground conditions, depth, diameter and antenna configuration. For more on this method, see our guide how to locate water pipes using GPR.

How do I choose a locator?

Clearly presented passive modes and simple operation are important for initial checks before earthworks.

Tracing a specific utility requires a compatible transmitter, suitable frequencies and connection accessories.

Data logging and positioning integration are useful for documenting utility routes.

Non-metallic pipes require a sonde, tracer wire or GPR.

Survey quality control

Carry out passive locating in at least two directions.

Apply an active method to the target utility and check for unwanted coupling.

Confirm the detections with transverse and verification profiles.

Compare the results with GPR or another independent method where conditions allow.

Record the route, approximate depth and confidence level of the interpretation.

You can practise equipment selection during utility locator and GPR training or test it at your own site through equipment rental.

Underground utility locating methods: passive modes, a signal transmitter, sondes, tracer wires and GPR.

[50,55
56,57,58,59
post-4089","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-lokalizatory","category-techniki-lokalizacji-sieci","tag-lokalizator-kabli","tag-lokalizator-rur","tag-wykrywacz-kabli-energetycznych","tag-wykrywacz-sieci
["GET
